Information + History
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Not an hacker. However, as a tsukumogami, Sayo would have a strong spiritual sense.
◎ Personality:
“I am Sayo Samonji. Who do you wish revenge upon......?”
Right off the bat, Sayo made a strong first impression with his introduction after the saniwa obtained him. His old master had a strong desire for revenge and used Sayo as a tool to achieve it. This left a deep impact on Sayo’s psyche and self esteem. From his normal lines to fighting on the battlefield, revenge was essentially the sole truth and driving force for his actions. Even if the Saniwa doesn’t wish for it, Sayo takes his role as a sword, and therefore a tool, seriously. Any injuries he received from the enemy, he would repay in kind or think about how to do it. If the player leaves the game on idle, he would get restless from inactivity and express his desire to seek out for more revenge. No matter what, revenge would almost always be on his mind.
"The darkness I carry, everyone sees beauty in it... I don't understand that..."
Sayo knew very well that his tale was bloody and full of hatred. While many humans see beauty in his story, especially philosophical and artistic ones, he can only recognised it as the dark truth. However, it’s also a cage which has trapped him inside a cycle of hatred and revenge. His death quote (“Aah... like this, I won't hate anyone, so this is fine...”), shows that he has nightmares about the people he’s killed in the past, making it clear that he felt trapped by his past. Sayo secretly wish to be free from constantly thinking about revenge and hatred, but his past had molded his outlook on life and made this difficult for him. Because of his past and how he observed the humans who used him, why wouldn’t he be anything but a tool for revenge and selfish desires? This outlook made it difficult (but not impossible) for Sayo to see himself as anything but a tool. Or being able to choose to live a life without hatred. It would be difficult, not impossible, for him to move on.
As mentioned in the official tweet, Sayo was also inherently distrustful of other people, mainly humans. This is because in the past, his old masters and those they interacted with showed him the dark and selfish side of humanity. This made him feel disinclined to grow close to anyone and trust in them at first. Even the Saniwa didn’t have his trust in the beginning, as Sayo believed he was summoned for yet another human’s selfish needs and even asked if the Saniwa wanted to have revenge on someone. Otherwise, the only people Sayo can trust in without any doubt are his brothers. Anyone else will need to prove their trustworthiness. At least in the sense that they won’t take advantage of him and use him for bloody ends.
Between his focus on revenge and his general distrust, he’s also not very good at being social. His past with his human masters never really gave him a lot of good opportunities to observe positive human interactions. Until he was summoned by the saniwa, Sayo was in a private collection, which further limited his experiences to seeing humans. That didn’t mean he can’t get better. For the people he do like, he can and try his best to improve himself for their benefit. It’d just be hard (but not impossible) for him to move past his vengeful mindset.
Like all swords, Sayo is loyal towards his Saniwa saniwa. Despite his initial distrust, he would follow his orders to the letter. Sayo may voiced his curiosities towards the Saniwa, such as when he’s assigned to be a squad leader (“Letting me be the captain... there should be something more to this.”), but he rarely complains. As a sword, it’s only natural for him to be used by his master.
With both of his brothers, Sayo would be quiet as always, but also comfortable in their presence. He knew that as brothers and fellow swords, his brothers are trustworthy people who won’t take advantage of him. As he’s aware of their pasts, Sayo would feel protective of them and try his best to watch out for both Kousetsu and Souza. While Sayo knew he has his own darkness to carry, he wouldn’t wish for his brothers to suffer any more.
Sayo Samonji was a confused spirit trapped by a cycle of revenge. However, by the end of it, he’s a good spirit who’s just tired of hating and wished to be free. Whether he will be free or not depends on how the war end, the saniwa’s choices and how Sayo would follow them.
◎ Powers/Abilities: As a tantou, Sayo specialises in short, weak strikes due to his blade’s length. However, he excels in fighting in the dark (e.g. night time battles) and launching surprising, hard hits (“critical hits”). Among the tantou, he’s generally the strongest out of them with only his mobility (AKA speed) being lower than the others.
As a tsukumogami of a sword, Sayo’s physical body is stronger, faster and more durable than a normal human in spite of his small size. However, to compensate, if his true form suffers any damages, his human form will be damaged as well. If his sword form breaks, he will die.
Due to his history, Sayo’s spiritual sense would likely be sensitive to any lingering vengeful feelings.

His hatred felt hazy.
After he learned more about ViViD, Sayo decided to come and try it again since the first time he fought there. The first time he woke up there, before he knew anything, his confusion and the familiar all-encompassing hatred was much stronger at the time. But now that he was informed of what’s going on, fighting inside ViViD today...didn’t make him happy. Unsatisified, actually. It’s almost like whenever he spar with other swords.
He never bore any ill will towards his fellow swords. Sayo could never fight against them like he usually do on the battlefield. He can fight at his best against them during sparring sessions, but he didn’t feel as strongly… invested compared to facing the Retrograding Army’s soldiers. The danger in sparring was never as real or life threatening as the battlefield.
That might be why his sword didn’t feel as powerful as it should every time he struck an enemy down. Although he can barely understand how it worked, Sayo do know that every opponents he fought in ViViD were merely illusions. Every time they die, it’s not a real death he’s watching.
It’s hard for him to feel satisfied fighting like this, even as it get more and more challenging for him to go through each rounds by himself. Sayo quickly dodged strong, but slow attack from his current enemy--no, not an enemy, it’s an opponent--and ran forward.
His true form thrust deeply into their stomach, in spite of his short length. Sayo pulled his vessel out and quickly step backward, watching his opponent fell to the ground. Again, he felt...almost empty with this victory. It’s not the same as diving into battle back in his world, when he can emotionally submerged himself in his hatred against the Retrograding Army.
Using his emotions against ViViD’s fake opponents felt almost like a waste to him. Sayo knew he can use his rewards here back in the “real world”. It’s a practical reason for him to go through with this simulation for them. He just… didn’t find any personal satisfaction in it.
But he can still use ViViD to train himself. Just so he can become even stronger and seek the dark revenge he craved for himself and everyone. With a quiet nod to himself, Sayo walked ahead to finish the rest of the level. After he’s done with this, that would be the end of this round. And then he can collect his rewards before he returned home.
Home to everyone and his Saniwa. Whose orders can helped him find a way to fulfil his desire for revenge.
